v1.1 - post 7DRL patch


Holy Cats! Holy Book is updated with a v1.1 patch.

I'm having a lot of fun working on and playing this one. It might be the most fun 7DRL I've made.

I usually do a balance patch after 7DRL, but to be honest this one is a little bit bigger than is typical. I realized, for instance, that the skill system I put in place during 7DRL was very easily extended to monster skills. I literally typed "when enemies attack then summon 1 vampire" and IT JUST WORKED 🤯. So I wanted to put those systems to work.

One big note: as you can guess by the resolution I intended for this game to work on mobile. It now does (at least for me). Please let me know how it works for you. I'll get some Android/iPhone builds out if I continue the project.

Changelog:

  • New monsters: Rat, Vampire, Wizard, Eye
  • Added some monster skills (e.g. Vampire turns into Bats on death)
  • Levels increased from 7 to 12
  • Boss (Lich) added to the final stage
  • Changed health & mana potions to be usable items instead of insta-use
  • Added two new statuses: Barrier and Chilled
  • Added new trigger words: Appear, Drink
  • Added new action word: Recharge - recharges all non-recharge spells
  • Unlocks are now forced. Sometimes player didn't even know it was a thing
  • Only available unlocks are now shown, since showing more is overwhelming
  • Verses can now be hovered, making it MUCH easier to glance at your build
  • Add summary info to Victory and Game Over screens
  • Generally rebalanced the game so it's still easy to feel OP but also easy to die if careless
  • The game should now work on mobile (scrolling the inventory is slightly jank right now, but works fine if you drag between words)
  • Added Continue/Wait/Retreat buttons
  • Word descriptions now appear on the upgrade screen and when dragging keywords
  • Verses with multiple summons are now penalized slightly
  • Healing now only targets hurt units
  • Changing piety bonus so you don't get more piety for later verses (they already give more charge anyway)
  • Upgrades now increase in price per level
  • Added some wall sprite variations
  • Summons are now quickly removed when enemies are all dead
  • Improved some performance issues with lots of monsters
  • Tried to fix some bugs with freeing memory (it seems to work)
  • Fixed a bug where Charges++ affected unlocked verses
  • Fixed a bug where Charges++ was lost upon verse edit
  • Fixed a bug where status stacks were removed instantly
  • Fixed a bug with verse icons not displaying properly sometimes
